THE ISLAND WITHIN
Where to
If ever a destination called for
elasticated waistbands, it’s this one.
Here are the top dining spots
Granma Pasta Garage
The Sardinian version of a fast and
furious Roman trattoria, this little
nook is run by two bei gnocchi as
they say in Rome: two young, heavily
tattooed chefs who knock out generous
and flavourful plates of classic Roman
pasta, all rolled and folded by hand.
Cheap and undeniably cheerful.

Ristorante Su Murruai
Tucked down a tiny side road, this old
mill has been tastefully redone and
serves a fixed menu of creative and
modern cooking: innovative gourmet
dishes made using local ingredients.

pasta on the menu is also sold by the
owner under his own brand.

Ristorante Altamarea
With the best position of any
restaurant I know of, Altamarea is
built right out into the beach, with
a stunning view of the skyline – it’s
the perfect spot from which to watch
the sunset over S’Archittu. The food is
classic and delightfully simple: grilled
seafood, steak and chips, and spaghetti
with clams. It gets very busy during
the summer and waiters fly around
in incongruous Hawaiian shirts, but
it’s well worth dropping by for a visit.

Osteria Sa Bell’e Crabasa
Locanda Da Renzo
A favourite for weddings and other
special occasions, this is quite a smart
restaurant (a fact reflected in the
price), but undeniably stylish. The
dining room overlooks the pool
and pretty gardens; the fish is very
fresh; and the traditional Sardinian

TA S T E B O U N D
A neighbourhood fish restaurant
that specialises in bottarga dishes
specifically, as it is in Cabras, where
grey mullet breed. Reliably good for
fish specials, and the kitchen is
extremely generous with the bottarga.

A little anomaly for Oristano, serving
eclectic food and pastries made with
international ingredients. There’s
a good outside space and a spacious
interior, it’s kid-friendly and the focus
is on fresh vegetables and inventive
dishes – and brunches – using flavours
not usually found in these parts. Lots
of options for vegans and veggies and
those with other dietary requirements.
