EDITOR'S LETTER
It’s a moment of separation
– from the mainland, from
routine – and a reminder that
the journey often shapes us
as much as the destination.
I’ve been counting down the
days to our family holiday in
the Isles of Scilly. We’ll board the
Scillonian in Penzance, bound
for St Mary’s, the largest of the
islands. Every morning brings
a new crossing – short ferry rides
to nearby isles, each with its
own distinct mood and rhythm.
It’s a trip I remember from
my own childhood, and now,
watching it unfold through the eyes of
my children, that same sense of awe returns.
A boat, a beach – and yet, even the simplest island
adventures make the world feel wondrous again.
That sense of awe surfaced at a Faroe Islands
event recently, where veteran travel writers
swapped stories with almost childlike nostalgia
– memories of discovering the Faroes on old
school maps, or first seeing photographs of
that now-iconic clifftop football pitch at Eiði.
On page 90, we explore how the Faroe Islands’
remoteness has shaped its unique cuisine. It’s a
thread echoed in Letitia Clark’s
story on page 42 – a journey
through Sardinia’s mountainous
interior, where age-old culinary
traditions diverge dramatically
from those on the coast.
We dedicate this issue – our
first – to islands. As places, yes,
but also as metaphors: for new
chapters, bold departures
and the thrill of stepping into
the unknown.
Because every journey has
a beginning – and this is ours.
